Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art and theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. While DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the historic civil right's march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. As studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was appointed to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual juror. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
